Abstract

During the 18th century, the collections of the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon with their important scientific instruments had to fulfil both a museological as well as a practical task. The reflecting telescopes by W. Herschel played an outstanding role among the instruments. Based on archival documents, the paper describes the acquisition history of the two telescopes, the making of a third one for the Lusatian scholar A.T. von Gersdorf, the quality checks of the mirrors and the frequently needed mirror repairs, which repeatedly interrupted the use of the instruments.
